Dear Homeowner

I’m sure you have all noticed the recent change in the weather, with temperatures starting to fall as we enter the winter months.

To ensure that the cold weather doesn’t cause you any undue issues, there are a couple of important points that we would like to bring to your attention:

Outside Taps (if fitted)

In freezing temperatures, there is a risk to the water in your outside taps freezing.  In extreme conditions, this can on occasion lead to burst pipes.

Preventive Actions

To prevent your outside tap from freezing and causing a burst pipe, take the following preventative actions:

  1. Disconnect Hoses:Remove all garden hoses from the tap. A connected hose can trap water near the tap, increasing the risk of freezing
  2. Isolating Valve:Locate the dedicated shut-off valve for the outside tap inside your home (usually under the sink). Close this valve to stop the water supply to the tap.
  3. Drain the Tap:Once the isolation valve is closed, open the outside tap fully to allow any residual water in the pipe to drain out completely.
  4. Insulate the Tap:it is a good idea to fit an insulating outdoor tap cover which can be purchased inexpensively from most DIY stores or Amazon (example shown by clicking on this link)

Following these quick and easy steps will help prevent avoidable leaks relating to frozen outdoor taps

Homes fitted with an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)

To ensure your ASHP works efficiently in winter, it is important that you:

  1. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and debris (leaves etc) so the flow of air is not restricted
  2. Keep your heating set to a steady temperature
  3. Use a consistent, slightly lower temperature overnight rather than switching the system on and off
  4. It is worth remembering that you must also have your ASHP professionally serviced on an annual basis.

PLEASE NOTE: We strongly recommend that the ASHP is not switched off entirely unless you are informed to do so by a qualified ASHP engineer.  This will help ensure that the system continues to work at its best during these periods when you need it most!

Kind Regards
